Flash Gordon, an American football star and title character in the classic 1980 film Flash Gordon, unwillingly travels aboard a rocket ship to the planet Mongo. In order to save Earth from impending destruction, Flash must unite the kingdoms of Mongo to defeat the evil Emperor Ming. Ming unleashes a series of natural disasters upon Earth, but his plans to destroy the planet are thwarted by Flash.

Ming the Merciless features a full array of ostentatious and decadent regalia equivalent to his movie counterpart---including the grotesquely large power ring. From Mongo, Ming the Merciless rules a multi-racial empire comprised of the likes of the Hawk Men and the Tree People. Braced by monstrous super-scientific weapons, Ming frequently amuses himself by facilitating the destruction of sentient worlds. However, Ming’s authority is challenged by Flash Gordon. Taking insult, Ming orders the death of Gordon, while simultaneously claiming Dale Arden as his consort and imminent bride. Flash escapes death due to Princess Aura’s interference, and ultimately manages to rally the Hawk Men and the Tree People against Ming.
